How to ask for a favor

  • How to ask for a favor

Hi there, Listen I don’t normally do this, but I was wondering could you do me a favor and read this story?

I know it sounds doll, Let me rework that.

I would like to ask you for a favor. Would you please read this story, because I am hoping that you will enjoy it and because it would make me happy.

By the way, That first request? not good. For many reasons but mainly because its assumed that request was a hassle.

Believe it or not, the requests are not hassles, the way we introduce the request is the hassle. Let’s admit that people love doing a favor. But why?

The research that was conducted at Cornell and Stanford University suggests that people want to comply with a request to avoid awkwardness. We unconsciously justify why we do it. (“This person must like me if they are asking!”) and feel positively toward the requester. Everyone feels defeated and insecure, including the one doing the rejecting. Moreover, “We think beating around the bush is more polite, when it isn’t.”

Finally, the favor request shouldn’t involve a reward. One, it’s not necessary. People are as likely to agree to do a favor without a reward as with one. And two, it spoils the arrangement.

When someone asks us for something -- particularly for advice -- we take it as an indication that the person doing the asking respects and values us.” Any kind of promise for a favor places an unnecessary pressure on the transaction.

Anyway, please feel free to ask me for a favor anytime ).

Re: How to ask for a favor

We see a lot of “VOTE FOR ME!” emails and messages these days, and it would be awesome to have that phrased as, “I’m excited to be a part of [contest name]! If you’re a supporter of [business name], I would greatly appreciate your vote here. Thanks so much for your time.”
